FREE Films, Foods and Discussion
KEET-TV invites you to a free screening of KEET’s newest cooking show My Family, My Flavors celebrating local youth chefs on Wednesday, February 26 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Arcata Playhouse. The event will also preview segments from the second season of the PBS show No Passport Required with Chef Marcus Samuelsson who explores immigrant traditions and cuisine in America.
This free event includes an opportunity to sample the three winning local dishes from KEET’s recent My Family, My Flavors recipe contest.
Arcata High School’s culinary class will cater this event so guests can participate in a tasting of their sundry offerings. Students will recreate dishes seen in My Family, My Flavors by using the three winning recipes along with some other selections.
A panel discussion about food will be led by Food for Thought host Jennifer Bell. The panel includes Chef-Wendy Chan, Arcata High School Culinary Instructor & Chef Neil Kalson with students from the culinary class, Vanessa Pacheco one of the student winners of the My Family, My Flavors contest, and Ivy North the Director of Programs for the North Coast Growers Association.
KEET’s recipe contest was held last year for local youth ages 14-25, who were invited to enter their favorite family recipes along with the story behind their particular dish. Three of these contestants were selected to share and cook their dish on KEET-TV.
Winners include Fortuna High student, Hailey Kanen who submitted her family recipe teriyaki bacon wrapped albacore. College of the Redwoods student, Vanessa Pacheco and her sister Briana submitted “The Wet Burrito.” Fortuna High student, Jacob Beyer submitted his grandmother’s pumpkin bar recipe.
