Jumella

Saturday, June 11th   2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Jumella

Returning to Humboldt with their second performance, Dell’Arte International alums Hannah Shaka and Marguerite Boissonnault bring their original physical theatre piece, Jumella, to the Arcata Playhouse. Audiences have the chance to enjoy this experimental blend of physical theatre and storytelling on Friday, June 10 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 11, at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Jumella is a story of twin sisters, two halves of one whole, struggling against the forces that seek to pull them apart.  Determined to be together, the two descend into Jumella, a mysterious world of spectral creatures that wrench them from moments of violence to tenderness. Can they overcome the depths of this world together? Using aerial silks and otherworldly masks, Jumella tells the story of the spirit’s search for transcendence. Written and performed by Falling Objects Theatre Company, Marguerite Boissonnault and Hannah Shaka.

Also featured in each performance will be the short piece When I die, Leave the Balcony Open/ Cuando Muera, Dejad el Balcón Abierto, created by Laura Muñoz and co-directed by Melanie Schauwecker.
A portrait of a lone woman in a land devastated by war. When challenges arise that can cost her life, she is undeterred from her mission.
Laura Muñoz is a dance and theater maker, somatics practitioner, educator, and arts instigator. In the past few years she has been creating pieces in indoor and outdoor spaces, in small intimate areas, and big public ones. She is investigating the question: how do we inhabit the public space in everyday life and art?

ABOUT THE JUMELLA ARTISTS:

Hannah Shaka, is a physical theatre-maker from Western Canada. She  is a co-founder of The Lost Girls burlesque troupe, with whom she has produced, performed, and toured regularly since 2013. She performed with the Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society  at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekender in 2016, where they won Best Large Group and Most  Comedic. Shaka received her MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre in 2020 from Dell’Arte  International School of Physical Theatre, where she was also awarded the Calgary Animated  Objects Society Scholarship. Her recent work in clown, drag, and cabaret has landed her solidly as a performer at festivals such as Dirty Bird Camp Out, Desert Hearts, and Lightning in a Bottle in California. She now lives in LA, where she works as a Teaching Artist and devises theatre with other fabulously strange artists.

Marguerite Boissonnault is an actor/creator, writer and physical storyteller from Utah. Currently residing in St. Petersburg, FL, she works as a teaching artist for American Stage, instructing and inspiring both youth and adults in the fundamentals of physical theatre. She received her MFA from Dell’Arte International in 2020, after which she made the move cross country to work with the Farm Arts Collective in Damascus, PA to devise a site specific piece on an organic vegetable farm addressing the effects of climate change. She strives to tell the stories of today with the people who live them, from the places they reside. Her work ranges from the intensely emotional to the delightfully absurd, yet always searches to uncover present truths about our society.

PLEASE NOTE: Guests will be required to wear masks and show proof of vaccination at the door.
