Hospital Heights, an original teen musical created and performed by Humboldt teens, shows at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 and on Friday and Saturday, June 19, 20 and 26, 27.
The Arcata Playhouse's teen program, Apprentice Entertainment, is bringing Hospital Heights to the stage . The production was devised completely by the teenagers in the program from Arcata High School and Northcoast Performing Arts Academy. The story is a psychological journey of a young girl named Jenny, as she descends into the depths of the human psyche, from which she ultimately ascends as a transformed young woman. Influenced by Dante's Inferno, the play visits a variety of patients in a hospital through Jenny's eye. Live music, production numbers and quirky characters enhance and keep the story moving. Think Dante's Inferno meets General Hospital meets Wizard of Oz.
Directed by Laura Muñoz, Dell' Arte faculty member and choreographer, the ensemble cast includes Taya Ross, Elizabeth Sloan Rouse, Amelia David, Trinity Morton and AJ Murphy. Musical Director Rich Macey, who is a Humboldt State music student and an original member the Playhouse teen program, writes music and conducts a three piece band with piano, clarinet and bass.
Opening night performance Thursday, June 18 is free to teenagers! Tickets at the door or reserve at 822-1575. Thanks to our sponsors Tomas Jewelry and the National Endowment for the Arts.
This summer the Arcata Playhouse offers two exciting theater workshops for children and teens -- Summer Youth Workshops, June 22-26, and Pageant on the Plaza, July 6-19. Our workshops are based on the Devised Theatre approach: we treat every participant as a natural writer, artist and visionary, and we focus on bringing out their originality and creativity. Our trained instructors offer kids skills to develop their ideas and bring them to life on stage. Check the Youth Workshop page for more information and call the Arcata Playhouse at 822-1575 to sign up!
Summer Workshops (for ages 6-14) include Clowning For Kids, Great Adventures, Mask & Comedia, and Improv in Action, each of which offer their own unique skills or theatrical form to explore. We have trained and experienced workshop teachers: Sarah McKinney, Hannah Gaff, Alyssa Hughlett are Dell Arte' graduates with extensive education experience; Everardo Cuerves is a seasoned theater improvisation teacher and artist in residence in local schools. During the Summer Youth Workshop week, kids gain confidence in their own creativity, have fun, make friends and grow to become skilled theater artists!
Pageant on the Plaza is for older kids and teens (ages 10-16) and offers a whole new adventure. Participants learn story creation and physical theater, music for outdoor performance, giant puppet construction and stilt walking. This workshop also focuses on ensemble building skills -- learning how to be a part of a creative team. Our experienced and talented teachers are Amy Tetzlaff, Anson Smith, Jesse Jonathon, Gregg Moore and Janarie Ricchio. During the Pageant Workshop, students become a performing ensemble and create an original play which is then performed at the Arcata Farmer's Market in Arcata and at Annie and Mary Day in Blue Lake. After their mini-tour of their play, the students feel exuberant and inspired about what they have shared with the community.
Phase One of our Office Remake is complete. We have beautiful bamboo counter workspaces, two-drawer file cabinets and storage shelves above and below. Thank you to Carl McGahan for his craftsmanship of the workspaces. The photos show Carl's handy work.
We are preparing for Phase 2 and 3 of our office remake now. We will be meeting with a designer to hone our plans for the storage loft and storage stairs. We will then solicit donations of materials and the help of volunteer builders to complete the project.
You can make a tax deductible donation to our office remake on our Crowdfunding page. Thanks to our wonderful donors, we are halfway to our fundraising goal! See all of our plans for the office remake.
